Bill graduated from Santa Ynez High School where he excelled in baseball. He was a teammate of Ed & John Fitzgerald. He grew up on the Hollister Ranch, where his father, "Bud", William Franklin Howerton was foreman. His mother was the former Rachel A. Lewis of Los Olivos, Ca.
After graduating from Santa Ynez High on a baseball scholarship, he spent a year at St. Mary's College, in Northern Calif. before he joined the Scranton Red Soxs as a hard-hitting outfielder and led the team to the Eastern League title in 1943. He was promoted to Louiseville, and later to Columbus for 3 years, before moving to the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1949. After 3 years he was traded to the Pittsburg Pirates, then the New York Giants in 1952. He left major league baseball after a shoulder injury and began a 26 year career in the trucking industry in Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife the former Betty McConnell of Scranton, PA on 9-7-66. They were married for 51 years.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert of Lompoc, CA in 1925.
He is survived by a son, William R. Howerton, of Dickson City, Pa. Bill is the head baseball coach for the University in Scranton.
