ROBERT W. "Bob" HOWERTON
June 20, 1924 - February 28, 2004

Robert W. "Bob" Howerton, 79 of Marion, passed away 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale surrounded by his family.

Mr. Howerton was a retired coal miner having worked for 35 years with Old Ben No. 25, Peabody Coal River King Underground Mine No. 1 in Freeburg, Freeman Coal Company and Lida B Coal Mine.

He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Herrin and was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force having enlisted in July 1941 and served in the European theater and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He was born June 20, 1924 in New Burnside to Paul and Edythe (Wise) Howerton and later moved to Harrisburg with his family.

Bob was united in marriage with Kathleen Chandler on March 15, 1946 in Herrin. They enjoyed 57 years together. She survives of Marion.

Also surviving are, two sons and daughters-in-law; Bobby Joe and Virginia Howerton of Johnston City, Paul Gene and Donna Howerton of Herrin, daughter and son-in-law, Lucinda and Dennis Howell of Edwardsville, five grandchildren and their spouses, Michael Joe (Ann) Howerton of Richmond, Va., John Paul (Kathy) Howerton of Herrin, Sarah Kay (Jason) Evans of Edwardsville, Amanda Marie Howell and Benjamin Howell of Edwardsville, four great grandchildren, Alex and Chandler Howerton of Richmond, Va., J. P. Howerton of Herrin, Alexandra Evans of Edwardsville; one sister, Pauline Emerson of Marion, one brother, James Howerton of Bedford, Texas, two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jean and Joe Deskins of Herrin, Delores and Joe Restivo of Colorado Springs, Colo. and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by parents, grandson, Chad Chandler Howerton, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marie and Joe Chandler, two brothers-in-law, Henry Emerson and Dick Lowery.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Visitation will be from 12 - 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home. Interment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion Post No. 645 and Baker-Ladd VFW Post No. 1567 will be in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
