George Morris Howerton, 96, of Paris, Texas
died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at his home.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Randall Perry officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr, Howerton was born June 22, 1904, in Paris to John Franklin and Martha Eudora Taylor Howerton. He graduated from Paris schools and went immediately to work for the J. C. Penney Company in June 1923. Mr. Howerton married Johnny Osborne February 9, 1941, in Cameron where he opened and managed the J.C. Penney store. He served as district manager over 44 stores for the Penney organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He retired as manager of the Paris store July 1, 1959. Mr. Howerton was a Shriner of Hella Temple in Dallas, a member of the Lions Club for over 60 years, former member of Gordon Country Club, and a former deacon and member of First Baptist Church of Paris and its Dr. A. B. White Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife; two nephews, John Franklin Howerton and his wife Peggy of Sun City, Arizona and George Howerton and his wife Wanda of Detroit, Texas; a number of great nieces and nephews; a special friend, John Lowery of Paris; and his caregivers, Ruby Logsdon, Yvonne Lister and Ellen Huffman. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Luther Alexander Howerton and William Chester Howerton; and one nephew, Don Howerton, on July 22, 2000.

Pallbearers were Carl Pierce, Wayne Templeton, Wayne Tolbert, Jim Stallings, Dr. John Mackey and Richard Fuller. Honorary bearers were members of Dr. A. B. White's Sunday School Class. www.legacy.com.
